Bio Medical Waste Solution

The inability of health care facilities to manage the health care wastes is a telling fact and pointing towards the need of the proper and scientific approach towards the management of the bio-hazardous wastes.

So, here at waste service, we provide you with a complete solution for biomedical waste as per the WHO guideline.

About 80% of biomedical waste is general waste, which does not require special treatment, if it is not contaminated with other infectious waste. Thus, segregation is the most important step in bio-medical waste management that reduces the risk as well as the cost of handling and disposal. As a result, we encourage our clients to segregate their waste at the source by providing them with five color coded containers for different category of waste: Red for anatomical, soiled waste and pharmaceutical waste. Yellow for solid waste apart from sharps and glasses, Blue for glass products, green for biodegradable general waste and black for non-biodegradable general waste. There will be a separate metallic container for sharps. Unless and until the waste is segregated, we don’t accept it.

Collection and temporary or on-site storage:

Wastes should not be allowed to accumulate at the point of production. The segregated waste at the source are collected when the containers are about three-quarters full and transported to temporary storage site. These containers are labelled with the name of its source in order to trace the waste back to its source if required. The temporary storage of waste are done in separate color-coded containers, provided by waste service. Likewise, the general waste are temporarily stored but in a separate room. The site, duration and the conditions for temporary storage are as per the WHO recommendations.

The person responsible for collection of healthcare wastes carry a register with him to maintain the records such as name of the healthcare unit, the type and quantity of waste received, signature of the authorized person from the healthcare unit side, day and time of collection etc.

Transportation:

IMG_3664A 1.5 ton capacity specially designed diesel run truck is used for the transportation of infectious waste. The waste collected in colored containers is transported to the CTF in this fully covered vehicle. The vehicle is dedicated for transportation of healthcare waste only. Another 2 ton capacity fully covered green vehicle is available for the transportation of general waste. The route of transportation and also the pick up time for the bio-hazardous and the general waste is completely different. As far as possible, the transportation shall be carried out during non-peak traffic hours. Also, it is ensured that the total time taken from generation of healthcare waste to its treatment,  won’t exceed 48 hours.  Our vehicle  possess the following:

  • Separate cabins is provided for driver/staff and the health care waste containers.
  • The base of the waste cabin is leak proof to avoid pilferage of liquid during transportation.
  • The waste cabin is designed for storing waste containers in tiers.
  • The waste cabin is designed in the way that it is easy to wash and disinfect.
  • The inner surface of the waste is made of smooth surface to minimize water retention.
  • The waste cabin have provisions for sufficient openings in the rear and/or sides so that waste containers can be easily loaded and unloaded.
  • The vehicle is labeled with the health care waste symbol. It displays the name, address and telephone number of the CTF.

Treatment

 At CTF, two autoclave of 511 litres and 420 litres capacity is used for non-incinerable waste which operates at either 121oC, 15 psi & 45 minutes. One shredder is used to shred disinfected plastics which can be sent for recycling. One concrete chamber for sharp waste disposal is also included within the facility. Anatomical waste will be disposed through deep burial within the facility. This burial chamber will be used for other suitable waste also. An effluent treatment plant has been added in the facility to treat wastewater generated from cleaning and washing of equipment and the waste carrying vehicle.

Management

After treatment, the recyclables are recycled, the biodegradable wastes are managed by composting and the remains are land filled, thereby providing a complete and eco-friendly biomedical solution.
